Birds set in stone

When it comes to burial art, birds are commonly used to decorate tombstones in graveyards, like the Old Burying Ground.

A bird in flight is symbolic of the “winged soul” bound for heaven. Here are some examples, all of which use a dove that is flying to the left. A coincidence maybe?

Not exactly a bird, but a common “bird-like” decoration on gravestones is a winged angel, like these (also flying toward the left) …
